Commentary
Caracalla received the name Antoninus in 196 AD. The statue could have been erected under his father Septimius Severus (until 211 AD) or under Caracalla’s own rule (211-217 AD). Similar text on another statue base from Augusta Traiana, erected under the charge of the first archon Aur. Demetrius, IGBulg III, 2, no. 1556; Demetrius is attested as first archon in one more inscription, a statue base for Iulia Domna, erected by the city, IGBulg III, 2, no. 1558. Mihailov supposes these statues could have been erected on the occasion of an imperial visit in Thrace in 196, 202 or 214 AD. The patronymic of the first archon, Apphus, is typical for Asia Minor.
